Is satin or silk better?

Satin Pillowcase, Satin Pillowcases for beauty sleep

A question we are asked all the time- Is satin or silk better for the hair and skin? Both satin and silk provide beauty benefits to the skin and hair, however there are many reasons that we chose satin over silk, and why our family has only used satin for our pillowcases for over 75 years. We had actually considered adding silk pillowcases to our Satin Serenity product line a couple of years ago, however since we personally did not enjoy sleeping on silk, it was simply something we could not promote. Here are some of the reasons we love satin:

  • Satin is non-absorbent, and therefore helps preserve the moisture in the hair and skin. Satin also won’t absorb any applied night creams. Silk (and cotton) are highly absorbent, which can rob hair and skin of their natural oils.
  • Satin feels cool to the touch, whereas silk warms up with body heat. For those who prefer to sleep on a cool surface, satin is the better choice.
  • Satin is easy to launder and will look beautiful for years. Silk’s thin, delicate fibers usually require hand washing and hanging to dry, and will degrade over time. Silk feels very thin and flimsy compared to the thick and lush Peau de Soie satin that our pillowcases are made with.
  • Satin is typically less expensive than silk.
  • Satin is considered Vegan. Most Vegans will not sleep on silk since it is derived from animals. According to the PETA website, approximately 3,000 silkworms die in order to make 1 pound of silk.
